KIND OF VERBS

Verbs are divided into three main classes:

(i) Transitive, (ii) Intransitive, (iii) Auxiliary.

Definition:

1. Transitive Verbs

A verb is Transitive if the action does not stop with subject (doer) but passes from the subject to something else, i.e., an object.

2. Intransitive Verbs

A verb is ‘intransitive’, when the action stops with the agent (subject) and does not pass from the agent to anything else

3. Auxiliary Verb

A verb is Auxiliary when it helps the principal verb.

For example:

  1. The man killed a snake.
  2. boy works hard.
  3. is writing a letter.

In sentence 1, the action denoted by the verb ‘killed’ passes over from the subject ‘man’ to the object ‘snake’ The verb killed is therefore, called a Transitive verb

In sentence 2, the action denoted by the verb ‘works’ stops with the subject ‘boy’ and does not pass over to any object the verb ‘work’ is therefore, called an Intransitive verb

In sentence 3, the verb is divided into two parts, viz, ‘is’ and ‘writing’ The first is called ‘Auxiliary’ or ‘helping verb’, and the second, Principal Verb.
