Preposition

A Preposition is a word placed before a noun or a pronoun to show its relation to some other word; as,

 

  1. The book is on the table.
  2. The knife is to cut with.

 

The use of certain Prepositions needs some explanation. And here it is.

(1)In & Within:- is used with reference to a limit of time; and “within”, in the sense of before the end of; as,

 

  1. He had to complete this painting in six days.
  2. I did this sum within ten minutes.

 

(2) In & Into:- “In” is used to denote rest; and “into” denotes “motion”; as,

 

  1. The manage was not in his office.
  2. Let us go into the garden.
  3. He jumped into the well.

 

(3) For & Since:- “For” is used for a period of time; and “Since”, for point of time: but each is preceded by a verb in the Perfect Continuous Tense; as,

 

  1. I have been waiting for him for two hours.
  2. She had been ill since Thursday morning.

 

(4) Between & Among:- “Between” is used for two persons or things; and “Among”, for more than two; as,

 

  1. Between you and me, I hate him.
  2. The three divided the property among themselves.

 

(5) After & behind:-“After” refers to time and “Behind” refers to place; as,

 

  1. She came after 6 p.m. ; and I, after 9.
  2. He sat behind me.
  3. I was standing behind the door.
